Abstract

The similarities and differences between the mother tongue and the target language play an effective role in the foreign language learning process. Students must acquire comprehension and expression skills in order to be fully active in the target language. In addition, the teacher should choose an effective method in teaching language to his students. Otherwise, foreign language learning cannot be fast and easy for students. In this study, the success of Kazakh students in Turkish listening comprehension skills was examined depending on the ratio of Kazakh-Turkish words with similar sounds and shapes. In addition, in the study, foreign language teaching and writing and listening skills, teaching Turkish as a foreign language to cognates and the problems encountered in teaching Turkish, Kazakh and Turkish sound and shape similarities were emphasized. As an application, two different texts in Turkish were played by Kazakh students. During this time, the students were asked to write down the words they heard and understood. While listening, writing and comprehension were detected in 95% of the students in text 1, this rate decreased to 55% of the students in text 2. The effective factor here is the number of common and similar words in Kazakh and Turkish. Keywords: Foreign language, listening and writing skills, common words in Smuggled and Turkish, teaching Turkish to cognates.
