Abstract

The ethyl acetate-soluble acids from extracts of immature apple seeds ( Malus domestica cvs Cox's Orange Pippin, Dabinett, Sunset and Tremlett's Bitter) were analysed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The following previously characterized gibberellins were identified by comparison of their mass spectra and Kovats retention indices with those of standards: GA 1, GA 3, GA 4, GA 7, GA 9, GA 12, GA 15, GA 17, GA 19, GA 20, GA 25, GA 34, GA 35, GA 44, GA 45, GA 53, GA 54, GA 61, GA 62, GA 63, GA 68, GA 80, GA 84, and 3- epiGA 54. In addition, a number of kaurenoid and gibberellin-like compounds were detected. The identity of one of the gibberellins with ent-3α,10β-dihydroxy-20-norgibberella-9(11),16-diene-7,19-dioic acid 19,10-lactone (9,11-didehydro GA 4) was confirmed by partial synthesis from GA 7 and is accorded the trivial name GA 88.
