Abstract
Let A be the generator of a positivity preserving semigroup and let B be another semibounded self-adjoint operator. We give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the generators for the inequality ¦ e−tBu ¦ ⩽ e−tA ¦ u ¦ to hold pointwise.
