Abstract

Specimens assignable to a new genus and species, Katavella orlovkensis, in the Family Corallinacea are described from two horizons, the Ust'katav layers near Orlovka (South Urals) and the Samsonov reef limestones near the former Samsonov farmstead on the Min'yar river. The former is assigned to the Upper Frasnian, the latter to the Middle Frasnian. The plants are described as under 4 mm in length, cylindrical at the base and bushy at the apex; composed of closely appressed, parallel single celled to multicellular filaments. The filaments in large thalli separate at the apex of the thallus and are in most cases tipped by a sporangium. Katavella is compared with Jania Larmouroux. Katavella lacks the segmented thallus, regular dichotomous branching and particular cell arrangement of Jania. The plants are thought to have grown in calm, shallow waters of normal salinity. --F. M.
