Abstract

Cass. (Asteraceae; tribe Cichorieae (Lactuceae) includes species with a variety of habits, ranging from perennial and annual herbs, to spinescent sub-shrubs, cushion-forming rosette shrubs and spinescent shrubs. Nearly it global with centers of diversity in the Mediterranean area to the north temperate climates. In Egypt, the Old World species are distributed around the Mediterranean up to the Arctic and down to the Nile through Ethiopia and East Africa to South Africa and Western Asia (Alavi 1983; Boulos 2002; Zareh 2005).
