Abstract

Karyology and ascus development in Cordyceps capitata are basically similar to the process described for the majority of higher ascomycetes. There are variations, however, which are evaluated for possible phylogenetic or taxonomic significance. The ascus tip structure is well differentiated. There is a proliferation of a membranous strand, the "tract," into the ascus, as has been reported previously in other ascomycetes. Also reported is the formation of croziers in branching chains as a mechanism for maintaining a dikaryotic ascogenous system.
