Abstract

In this paper an attempt is made to better understand the regularities of karst development and karst distribution in China on the basis of analyses of karst morphogenetic types in China. The different association in time and space between tectonic unites and climatic zones with varying characteristics tends to give rise to various kinds of geologic-geographical environments, and, therefore, results in the development of various types of ancient and modern karst landscapes. Each individual environment of karst development in combination with the karstification process and the karst landscape formed within it constitutes a karst morpho-genetic type. Ten morpho-genetic types of karst in China are discussed, of which five are illustrated in detail.
