Abstract

Bergh attempts to capture the essence of his close friend Karl Nordström’s recent landscape paintings, several of which were painted on the island of Tjörn in Bohuslän on Sweden’s west coast. Bergh discusses the emotional impact of the landscape paintings of Nordström and the Varberg School (of which he was a founder) and sees emotional expression as the purpose of “genuine” art. The essay also recalls the early days with Nordström, studying under Edvard Perséus in Stockholm and painting out of doors at the artists’ colony at Grez-sur-Loing.
