Abstract

The aim of the research is to analyze the characteristics of the stationary health care use with the persons at the age of 65 and above the age in the Clinical hospital center, Kragujevac, with the special attention paid to lethality and mortality structure. The hospitalization reports, for the period 1999-2002, served as the data source. In the stationary treatment in the Clinical hospital center, Kragujevac during the period 1999-2002 the total number of the persons at the age of 65 and above it was 26532: 42.3% belonged to the age group 65-69 years, 32.9% belonged to the age group 70-74 years, and 24.8% was at the age of 75 and above it. The dominant sex in the mentioned age groups was female. The participation of the elderly in the total number of those being in the treatment during the analyzed period amounted to 28.7%. The average hospitalization rate with this age group was 21.47. The analytic account of the hospitalization structure with the persons at the age of 65 and above it, according to the most frequent groups of diseases, points to the fact that circulatory diseases are on the top priority place. Next to it, according to the frequency, are tumors (the most frequent localizations are breast, lung, and colon) and the diseases of digestion system. The average duration of the treatment with the persons at the age of 65 and above the age in the Clinical hospital center, Kragujevac was 16.80 days, SD=253.98. The shortest treatment episode lasted 1 day, and the longest one 170 days. The treatment episode for the major number of patients lasted 5-9 days. In the oldest age group, circulatory diseases are the leading cause of mortality, participating with 64.01%, next to it are tumors of all localizations, participating with 11.92% and the diseases of digestion system, participating with 4.46% in overall mortality. In the analysis of the average lethality rate with this age group it is determined that the average lethality rate is 11.6. In relation to the causes of death, the lethality rate is the highest one with circulatory diseases.
