Abstract

Skeletons are basic materials of paleoanthropological studies. The most important point for paleoanthropologists at the study on skeletons is identifying the sexuality of an individual confidentially. This identification will be the basis for the later evaluations. There are two methods for identfying sexuality from skeletons. First method is identifying sexuality by paying attention to morphological characteristics of the bones. Other method is metrical method by using measures obtained from bones. Discriminant analysis is also the comman metric analysis for identifying the sexuality from skeletons nowadays. Our study materials are consisted of 890 individuals and of skulls obtained from 139 women and 176 men. These materials are obtained from the excavation sites at Van-Karagunduz between 1994-1999. The project was headed by Prof. Dr. Veli Sevin and sponsored by Istanbul University Literature Faculty and Van Region History and Research Center (Sevin ve Ozfirat, 2000). The measures of the skulls dated to middle ages and 30 endis figured out from these measures are investigated with disciminational analysis method by SPSS program in order to search for distinguishing differences between male and females. After evaluations it was concluded that the confidence intervals for measares of Karagunduz Community skulls are respectively upper face height (%84,4), bizygomatic wideness (%81,7) and morphological face height (%80,8). It is determined that the most reliable skull endis among Karagunduz Community are fronto orbital endis (% 76,5), zygomandibular endis (%75) and fronto-gonial endis (73,9).
