Abstract

Kaposi sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm associated with human herpesvirus-8, classically affecting immunocompromised patients. A 33-year-old HIV-positive male patient sought dental care complaining of a lesion, of 7 months' evolution, in the right posterior mandible. The patient initially reported the presence of pain that progressed to dysphonia and dysphagia. Intraoral examination revealed a multilobulated purple lesion, with undefined limits and either pediculated or sessile insertion. Incisional biopsy was performed in view of a hypothesis of Kaposi sarcoma. The results of the histopathologic analysis revealed a neoplastic lesion characterized by spindle cell proliferation and numerous vascular clefts caused by intense vascular extravasation, confirming the diagnosis of Kaposi sarcoma. The patient underwent complete removal of the lesion and was sent to a reference center to continue treatment.
