Abstract

Aim: Herbal therapy is using herbal or herbal combinations for therapeutic purposes. It is very common among the cardiovascular patients to use herbal products. However in this group of patient using herbal products can lead to morbidity and mortality as they might interact with medications and anaesthetic agents. In this study, herbal product usage among cardiovascular surgery patients and associated factors were investigated. Matherial and method: The sample of this descriptive study was consisted of 150 volunteer patients over 18 ages admitted to cardiovascular surgery outpatient department between July and September 2013 of two private hospitals located in Izmir province. Data were collected using face to face interview. Results: It was found that 50,7% of patients used herbal products and 48.7% of patients using these products took them for treating cardiovascular disease. The most frequently used products were thyme (18,7%), garlic (16,0%) and fennel (8,7%). The patients did not know that herbal products might have a side effect (59.2%) and 48,7% of the patients have not informed the physician or nurse that he/she was using herbal products. Conclusion: It has been found that usage of herbal products were common among cardiovascular surgery patients. Health care staff should inquiry the herbal product usage as well as taking patients previous details
