Abstract

The sea tuntong (Batagur borneoensis) (Schlegel and Muller 1845) is a turtle that lives in the mangrove ecosystem. Sea tuntong is a reptile that has an important ecological role as a seed dispersal of mangrove plants, especially Sonneratia sp. This turtle is one type of large freshwater turtle whose natural distribution is only found in a limited way in Southeast Asia. Based on the distribution map made by Van Dijk et.al (2000), sea tuntong is known to be found in Southern Thailand, the east coast of Sumatra, the west and south coasts of Kalimantan, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. In the administrative area of Aceh Tamiang Regency which is the only limited distribution area of sea tuna, the Government of Aceh Tamiang Regency has established sea tuna as a protected animal through Aceh Tamiang Regent Regulation No. 2 of 2014 concerning the Protection and Preservation of Sea Tuntung, and the Regent's Decree Aceh Tamiang No. 63 of 2014 concerning the Designation of Sea Tuntong Species as Protected Animals in Aceh Tamiang District. The threat issued by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) in 1996, the sea tuntong is designated as one of the species of animals with the status. -each. For example, since it was designated as a protected animal in Aceh Tamiang District in 2014, the Aceh Tamiang District Government has determined in the 2012-2031 Aceh Tamiang District Spatial Plan the function of the Water Nature Reserve area of 981.70 ha. In Critically Endangered (CE) status because there has been a very significant population decline reaching 80% for 10 years or three generations (IUCN 2014). Based on international trade status, since 1997 the sea tuntong has been included in Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) (IUCN 2014).
