Abstract

Abstract Sandstones from the Kaihiku Range (S179), South Otago formed the basis of a stratigraphic unit of reference from the very beginning of systematic work in southern New Zealand. Because of its Middle Triassic brachiopod-Daonella fauna, Kaihiku Series of Hector, 1865 was used in a biostratigraphic sense as early as 1878. The Kaihikuan Stage of Marwick 1951 isolates the biostratigraphic element in Hector’s series. Kaihikuan strata make up 420 m of siltstone, shellbed, sandstone, conglomerate, and tuff in the Kaihiku Stream section. The first appearance of Spiriferitza kaihiktlana in the section defines the base of the stage. Etalian and Oretian faunas occur in the same section. The Kaihikuan fauna can be readily distinguished from these and shows comparatively little variation geographically and stratigraphically. A checklist of species described from Kaihikuan beds is included.
