Abstract

The rapid advancement of industrialization, the large change in social life, migration from rural areas to cities which is caused by in developing countries leads to excessive population growth and unplanned urbanization. These developments lead to the destruction of forest resources at the same time. This situation is more pronounced particularly the inner city and the surrounding region of the city. In this study, the distribution of green areas in and around the city of Kahramanmaras, adequacy and exposure to hazards, within the framework of population growth and urban development are examined. The importance of green spaces of the urban people, the expectations and consciousness level of the people concerned with green spaces questionnaire method were determined based on 518 participants. The results of based on questions are expressed in percent. A large part of the participants reported that green areas in the city and the surrounding area had the positive effects of the quality of urban life and also creating urban identity and to gain image to the city. In addition to, more than 90% of the respondents have believed that population growth, the economic and spatial developments led to the destruction of green areas in the inner city and the surrounding region of the city. In order to improve the quality of urban life in Kahramanmaras, protection of existing green areas the development of infrastructure of green areas, new areas should be established to reach in the western standards the amount of green space per capita.
