Abstract

In this study, we develop the experimental system for 2R+2 N_2-REMPI and apply it to measure the rotational temperature in a supersonic free molecular nitrogen flow. There appear the non-equilibrium phenomena in the highly rarefied gas flows, such as the translational and rotational non-equilibrium and the rotational non-equilibrium. In this study, we find the strong rotational non-equilibrium in the free molecular nitrogen flow issued from the source chamber kept at 1.2 Torr into the expansion chamber at 3.2×10^<-5> Torr. The data in the Boltzmann plot, obtained from the REMPI spectra, can not be fitted by a line but approximately by two lines, revealing the non-Boltzmann distribution of the rotational energy in the ground state.
