Abstract

Synopsis Potassium-argon measurements have been carried out on eight samples of E-W tholeiitic dykes exposed around Fishnish Bay. Chipped whole-rock samples give an age of 57.9 Ma 1 which is substantiated by age/mesostasis relations in powdered samples. A N-S dyke cut by the E-W tholeiites yields an age of 61 Ma. These measurements place constraints on the age of the NW-SE to N-S Hebridean Tertiary dyke-swarm, the Mull central intrusive complex, the dextral shift postulated for the Great Glen fault (Holgate 1969) and on the magnetic polarity time-scale for the lower Tertiary interval.
