Abstract
This chapter explains the measurement of K and L shell particle parameters for the 84.2-keV transition. Momentum selection of the conversion electrons is accomplished with a magnetic lens spectrometer constructed for electron-electron and electron-gamma directional correlation measurements. The gamma-ray detector is free to move through 180° about the source. A special source cup allows electrons to be energy analyzed in an external beta-detector consisting of Ne-2 plastic crystal coupled to RCA 6342A phototube. Electrons emerge from the cup through exit ports of Mylar and aluminium foils at the 90° and 180° positions. The chapter discusses the L-conversion-electron-beta-ray directional-correlation for the 84.2-keV transition in the decay of Tm+ are measured and reported to be isotropic. An experiment similar to the beta-ray-K-conversion-electron directional correlation is performed for the L conversion electron. An uncertainty in the measurements is the beta-gamma directional correlation. The error in the ratio is considerably better than for either of the two individual measurements.
