Abstract

Directional solidification experiments were carried out in a Hele-Shaw cell using an aqueous ammonium chloride solution by cooling it from below with a constant temperature surface. The experiments were examined by changing initial fluid temperature. Onset and subsequent evolution of salt-finger and plumes convection were investigated. The dynamic structures of salt-finger and plumes convection in the bulk liquid region were visualized by sequential three color light sheet method which can identify upward and downward flows in the melt. Furthermore, development of channel in the mushy layer was examined.
