Abstract

Scratching test is widely used to examine the adhesive strength of a coating material by which the adhesive strength is evaluated as the critical load. However, such a critical load depends on die shape of the diamond indentater, the frictional condition, the thickness and mechanical properties of the coating layer, etc.. Therefore, it can not provide a quantitative evaluation method to describe the adhesive strength. This study have proposed an evaluation criterion, based on the intertacial shear stress, by which the adhesive strength can be evaluated without the geometrical influences. Scratching test is carried out under three test conditions, aid it is found that the experiment results can be explained by the criterion proposed. An iterative analysis method is also proposed to obtain the intertacial stress with taking account of the frictional force. It is found that the frictional force in the scratching lias a sever effect on the critical load.
