Abstract

The incidence of Juxta papillary duodenal diverticula (JPDD) varies from 6-15% in different studies. In addition, data concerning the association of JPDD with pancreato-biliary disorders is inconsistent. Some studies have suggested increased incidence of biliary tract stones in patients with duodenal diverticula due to mechanical compression with bile stasis and/or bacterial contamination. Methods: 234 consecutive ERCP examinations from 211 patients were retrospectively analyzed. 32 patients had JPDD while the remaining 179 patients of similar mean age served as control. Data was analyzed by the Fisher's Exact Test. Results: See Table Conclusion: The incidence of JPDD was 15% and was stongly associated with the presence of biliary tract stone disease compared with control. However, JPDD was not associated with advanced age or acute pancreatitis as reported elsewhere. In addition, JPDD did not cause any technical difficulty in stone extraction from common bile duct.
