Abstract
In chivos (concerts) we always find music present, which functions as a cultural expression and forms part of the creation of identities, where social dynamics are also charged with symbolism and meanings. Therefore, for this article we sought to understand how cultural management operates in ska chivos in the metropolitan area of San Jose (Costa Rica). Through participant observation in 20 concerts between 2013 and 2015, and the application of 22 interviews to different actors, is achieve as a result the description of the necessary organizational strategies to carry out a chivo (concert). Also determined some processes of participation and meanings that these activities have for their followers, where it was glimpsed how the chivo is a space of celebration, identity and artistic expression. The analysis also showed how young people, from non-institutionalized places, make decisions and carry out actions that make it possible to manage an identity, a space and a need to show cultural aspects that particularize a group, that is, they open up some alternative cultural management processes.
