Abstract

This report analyzes a total of 124 “juvenile” retention polyps of the colon and rectum in 50 patients, 8 of whom were adults. Twenty-four percent of the patients had more than one polyp, but late recurrences were seen only in 2 patients with diffuse multiple polyposis. The development of carcinoma in a juvenile retention polyp is not recorded, either in the present series or in the literature. Unlike the adenomatous polyp, the juvenile retention polyp does not appear to be of neoplastic origin; it may represent a hamartomatous or inflammatory process.
