Abstract

The most interesting proposal about the canon of Scripture since Barth's discussion of the canon in the 1930's is Ernst Kasemann's proposal that 'justification by faith' be the canonical principle. He advanced this proposal during the 1950's and early 1960's in several articles. Perhaps the three most significant among them are: (a) Bergrundet der neutestamentliche Kanon die Einheit der Kirche?; (b) Zum Thema der Nichtobjektivierbarkeit; (c) Zum Gegenwiirtigen Streit um die Schriftauslegung. This proposal could and must be examined from many sides. Since Kasemann advances this proposal against Protestant orthodoxy's identification of canonical Scripture with the Gospel, on the one hand, and against the tacit dismissal of a canonical Scripture by historical criticism, on the other hand, and says that he is able to do so by following the theology of the reformation, a first avenue of examination is to ask the question whether or not his proposal accords with the understandings of Luther and Calvin.
