Abstract

Transitions and transformations literature signals the need for radical and large-scale changes for more sustainable futures. In addition to more plural and nuanced understandings of these concepts of change, we need to engage with how we do this type of research, and with whom. We ask: How might research based on responsibility, relationality, and reciprocity change the range of possible outcomes of transitions and transformations, towards more just research, leading to more equitable and inclusive outcomes? Our own response to this question, we humbly lay bare our experiences as white Canadian settler academics still learning from (not speaking for) our Indigenous colleagues. We frame this learning around the pillars of responsibility, relationality, and reciprocity and invite you to consider how you can incorporate these practices in your research. We end our invitation with questions derived from our experiences and reflections. Our intention is to open up this discussion, and collectively expand how we engage in transitions and transformation research.
