Abstract
Law’s validity… is a matter of its normative character, its nature as a coherent system of meaning, as prescriptive ideas and values. Validity lies ultimately in law’s capacity to make claims supported by reason, in a discourse that aims at and depends on agreement between citizens.” lloyds introduction to jurisprudence, at p. 733. This write up seeks to elaborate on the essential elements of sociological approaches to law. Critique how these elements differ from those of the natural law school on the one hand and, on the other, those of positivist schools of thought on the question of law’s validity and legitimacy.
