Abstract

Abstract Before the life of Jesus is retraced within the gospels (in later chapters), it is reasonable to ask: What were the jurisdictions in which he lived? The political geography of the gospels is highly complex. Judaea is a Roman province, but Galilee--the center of Jesus' prophetic life--is a territory which belongs to a Herodian dynast. In this chapter, therefore, the gospels' political geography is sketched. Further, readers are introduced to surviving data on the Roman prefect of Judaea, Pontius Pilate--the Judaean high priest, Joseph Caiaphas--and the Galilean tetrarch, Herod Antipas.
