Abstract

Middle Jurassic volcanic rocks unexpectedly encountered during North Sea drilling operations seem to have oceanic affinities. Though this finding may seem surprising in a suite situated in a continental basin, it can be explained using a plate tectonic model. According to the model, the volcanism developed along a line of incipient sub-crustal rifting during the early opening of the Atlantic. Before crustal splitting occurred, however, the spreading axis migrated westwards and the well documented volcanism of the North-west Tertiary Igneous Province developed.
