Abstract
Advanced nursing roles have been developing in modern health care for many years, with evidence suggesting they offer a quality patient experience and equitable clinical standards of care to that of junior medical colleagues. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore junior doctors' perceptions of the specialist nurse (SpN) role in acute cardiology. A purposive sample of six doctors were interviewed using taped semi-structured interviews. The categories that emerged from the data covered role boundaries and crossover, the issue of qualifications, understanding of SpN roles, and finally how this impacts the junior medical team. The findings concluded that ongoing issues with role clarity, expectations and boundaries continue to be an area of concern within the clinical setting. The overall perceptions from the junior doctors of the specialist nurse role were positive with evidence of good collaboration but with some areas for improvement. Fears around future training and the impact SpN roles have on junior doctors were also apparent; however, they are acknowledged as a relevant addition to teams with the modern demand on health-care services.
