Abstract

Abstract: This is the first truly solid critical and comprehensive edition of Thomas of Cantimpré’s Bonum universale de apibus (The Universal Good of Bees), a major and highly influential treatise, formally on the societies of bees as analogy for human society, primarily, however, on the communities of Dominican friars and their parishioners. The first volume contains an in-depth study of the work, its manuscript tradition, and history of reception. The second volume contains the Latin original on the left and the modern German translation on the facing pages. Julia Burkhardt submitted this massive work as her habilitation to the University of Heidelberg in 2018, which was completed in 2019.
