Abstract

Background: Jugular venous distention is a marker of elevated central venous pressure (CVP); however, method for assessing jugular vein has not been standardized. Jugular venous pulsation (JVP) in the sitting position would be a maker of elevated CVP. Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine JVP in the sitting position and to compare its CVP by catheter. Method: Eighty-two patients who had hemodynamic evaluation by Swan-Ganz catheter were analyzed. JVP was assessed in the sitting position just before catheter in all patients. Result: Eighteen patients had JVP (22%). Patients with JVP had more elevated CVP than those without(14.6 ± 4.7 mmHg vs. 4.5 ± 3.1 mmHg, respectively; P < .001). Conclusion: Examining JVP in the sitting position is a reliable maker for elevated CVP.
