EDITOR,—Reports in the BMJ have drawn attention to a series of recent decrees of the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council introducing amputation of the right hand as judicial punishment for theft, with amputation of the left foot for a second offence.1 2 Amputation of one ear is decreed as punishment for evasion of the draft, military desertion, or harbouring deserters.
