Abstract

This chapter raises questions about Gospel of Judas in general and earliest published interpretations of it. How can seasoned and distinguished scholars so thoroughly misread this gospel? In attempting to answer this question it must noted that Gospel of Judas is a very unusual and complicated text. Its difficulties are compounded by physical condition of manuscript, with extensive lacunae occurring in crucial passages. The chapter attempts to answer following questions: How does Judas Iscariot know who Jesus is? Is number thirteen Judas' lucky number? Can Judas be seen as a member of immortal generation? What is the kingdom whose mysteries are revealed to Judas? To whom does Judas offer his sacrifice? It looks upon Gospel of Judas as an ironic literary caricature of a gospel. The only thing that makes it a gospel is Sethian myth embedded in it. Keywords: Gospel of Judas ; Jesus; Judas Iscariot; sacrifice; Sethian myth
