Abstract

The objective of this research was to explore the correlation between two models concerning coach-athlete relationship, Jowett model and indigenous model, and to investigate the prediction of these two models on conflict management styles and athlete burnout. The research sampled 353 intercollegiate division I athletes with mean age of 20.20 years (SD=1.47). The tools included Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (athlete’s direct perspective), Scale for Chinese (indigenous) Coach-Athlete Relationship, Scale for Conflict Management Styles, Integration and Negotiation of Conflict Management Styles, and Scale for Athlete Burnout. Canonical correlation and multiple regression analyses were performed under the condition of excluding the explanatory power of background variables. The research results were as follows: 1. Two canonical correlations both reached the significant level (σ=.825, .308,p<.05). The first pair of canonical factors indicated that highly spontaneous emotion of indigenous model is positively correlated with closeness and complementarity of Jowett model. The second pair suggested that highly spontaneous emotion is positively correlated with high closeness of Jowett model, but it has negative correlation with high commitment. Besides, highly instrumental relationship is founded to positively correlated with high commitment but negatively with high closeness. 2. Prediction for conflict management styles: Jowett model is found to have more pure explanatory power (ΔR2=.071, p<.05) to “integration” than indigenous model (ΔR2=.030, p<.05). In addition, neither Jowettmodel’s nor indigenous model’s explanatory power to “domination” reaches the level of significance. 3. Prediction for integration and negotiation of conflict management styles: indigenous model has more pure explanatory power (ΔR2=.027, p<.05) to “integration” than Jowett model(ΔR2=.013, p<.05). The research results revealed that in addition to Jowett model, indigenous model has much pure explanatory power to the impact on conflict management styles and athlete burnout. It was recommended that coaches emphasize the coach-athlete relationship so as to promote a good conflict management style and reduce athlete burnout in appropriate situations.
