Abstract

AbstractThis paper is based on the Janet Kinson Lecture, given at the Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference 2001. The lifelong nature of living with diabetes can be likened to a journey, during which a number of events may occur and need to be dealt with. Using the analagies of ‘hijack’ (the diagnosis of diabetes), ‘breakdown’ (the need for hospital admission), and ‘refuelling and servicing’ (consultations for routine care and surveillance), the paper describes and discusses these key issues in diabetes care. The paper also discusses ‘transport policy’ (the influences of political level on the provision of diabetes care) and highlights some important issues for ‘navigators’ (diabetes specialist nurses). Finally, it suggests a new, alternative ‘transport infrastructure’ (a programme of training for diabetes health professionals). Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
