Abstract

Data from North American studies reveals that African-American men have an increased possibility of developing prostate cancer compared to their Caucasian counterparts. This relative risk has variously been recorded as a 20 per cent–66 per cent increase. It has also been reported that black men present younger with more advanced disease and significantly higher Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels. This paper presents findings from a population based audit, conducted 1999- 2000, of all newly diagnosed men presenting to East London and City Health Authority with histologically confirmed prostate cancer to establish whether such ethnic differences exist in the UK.
