Abstract

This paper explores lines of influence between Josiah Royce and his student, C.I. Lewis. Lewis himself acknowledged affinities between his conceptual pragmatism and Royce’s absolute pragmatism. Royce directly influences Lewis in his pursuit of logical issues and both advocated forms of modal logic. Both Lewis and Royce thought metaphysical issues important and they share affinities with process philosophy. Royce argued that ethics was first philosophy and Lewis pursued a cognitive grounding of value judgments.
