Abstract

“The book of Joshua is embarrassment enough, with its ferocity and its religious advocacy of mass murder … What is the reason for resurrecting Calvin's commentary on the book of Joshua? I find that as I reflect upon both Joshua and Calvin, I feel, in somewhat different form, my own personal version of the Reformer's bad conscience—as if a whole host of long-forgotten theological vultures were coming home to roost.”
