Abstract
The following article was occasioned by Hamlet as a Happening, presented by Joseph Papp, director of Shakespeare in Central Park, for his New York Shakespeare Festival Theater in The Village. The daring nature of the Happening-with its song and dance routines, Puerto Rican accented to-be-or-not-to-be soliloquy, and rock and roll background-provoked a series of articles in The New York Times, which in turn resulted in passionate letters from educators, scholars, and parents.
