Abstract

Interest in neurological paraneoplastic syndromes was enjoying a renaissance when Josep Dalmau arrived in New York City, USA, in 1988. A native of Sabadell, on the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain, Dalmau attended college and medical school at the University Autònoma of Barcelona. As a neurology resident, he struck up a friendship with Francesc Graus, another young neurologist who had just returned from a neuro-oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA. Knowing that Dalmau was also interested in neuro-oncology, Graus urged his friend to go to the Center.
