Abstract

The h-index and how it is calculated are explained. The article begins with a short biographical note of its inventor Jorge E. Hirsh, nuclear physicist and pacifist. The characteristics of the h-index and the criticisms it has received are discussed. Other derived indices (m, i, g) are pre-sented. A brief mention is made of the Publish or Perish program.
