As the first sustained examination of the Harlem-based American Negro Theatre (active from 1939–49), this book offers thoughtful analysis and provides a provocative foundation for future research. Shandell examines the ideological tensions at the company’s core and draws links from its work to twentieth and twenty-first century racial aesthetics and politics.
