Abstract

Join time-frequency analysis method (JTFA), specifically the Wigner-Ville distribution, is employed to analyze chirped and unchirped Gaussian pulses in optical fibers with third order dispersion (TOD). WVD evolution along the fiber is given and in good agreement with the data obtained by the traditional time or frequency domain method. The relationship between the initial chirp parameter, TOD, second order dispersion (SOD) and the WVD is also given. The proposed method can better demonstrate energy distribution of the signal in both the time domain and frequency domain and gives more information about the signal; it has potential applications in the optical fiber communication field
