Abstract

Characterizing reservoir compartments, facies and sand continuity is crucial in maximizing the potential values of a field. However, the conventional attributes and inversion are inadequate for complex depositional environment, making it difficult to ascertain reservoir heterogeneity. We develop a joint spectral and elastic analysis to address this problem. The spectral analysis provides information on the lithological boundary and facies interpretation, whereby, elastic inversion and projection provides fluid distribution and lithological mapping. The field involves in this study is a matured oil field in the Malay Basin with a complex depositional environment that consists of meandering channel such as overlapping point and mouth bars along a coastal plain. There are abundant of development wells, however, there is still lack of visible geologic controls for reservoir management and simulation. Injectors and producer wells are not communicating, thus, planning for infill wells becomes difficult, especially if there is any impermeable layers. This paper demonstrates this method better map sand continuity between the injectors and producer wells and discriminates the hydrocarbon sand.
