Abstract

A class of video network applications require fixed video quality, which leads to variable rate allocation. Conventionally rate control algorithms have been proposed for steady state performance. However, variable rate allocation requirement results in significant transients. This paper proposes a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) based rate controller, which not only provides desired steady state performance but also gives an improved transient performance. An augmented Lagrangian approach is used to design PID based rate controller and its stability is proved using Lyapunov stability theory. Numerical results show the performance improvement achieved by the proposed approach.
