Abstract

The refinement of the dynamic tripod grip in children aged 3 to 7 years was described by noting joint position changes in the forearm and in the proxilmal interphalangeal joint (PIP) and the distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) of the index finger. The results showed no significant differences in PIP joint position between younger and older children. Younger children showed little difference in preference for a flexed or hyperextended position of the DIP joint of the index finger, whereas, older children assumed a hyperextended position of the DIP. Analysis revealed significant differences between younger and older girls on DIP and forearm position, but not between younger and older boys. These variations should be kept in mind when evaluating grip posture.
