Abstract

Joining of recrystallized SiC ceramic to high strength graphite has been successfully realized using Ni–Cr–SiC powders as filler. The obtained maximum three-point bending strength of joint is 39.5 MPa, which is equal to 98.8% of the strength of the graphite. Interdiffusions and chemical reactions take place in the weld zone. A reaction layer and an interlayer form in the interfacial area. The total thickness of the two layers is about 350 μm. The reaction layer in contact with SiC ceramic is mainly composed of Ni 2Si and C with a little Cr 23C 6. The interlayer existing between the graphite and the reaction layer is mainly composed of Cr 23C 6 and Ni 2Si.
