Abstract

In this contribution, originated as a talk delivered by the author at the Seminar of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures on April 20, 2005, the author recalls her stay at Johns Hopkins from 1941 to 1945 when she obtained her Ph.D. in French Linguistics, underlines the special scholarly atmosphere created by the presence of great teachers, both American and Europeans, the impact of Leo Spitzer's method and personality on his students. Later she was a witness to Spitzer's Italian years, from his coming to Rome, in 1955, to his death in Forte dei Marmi in 1960.
