Abstract

A career in medicine for the newly installed President of the Radiological Society of North America might well have been anticipated since both his father and mother were physicians. At one time he had sixteen living relatives who were physicians, including his maternal grandfather who practiced medicine for fifty years in Pennsylvania. His father, W. H. Gilmore, was a radiologist and a charter member of the Radiological Society of North America. John Gilmore was born in down-state Illinois, April 21, 1907, where he received his early education; he was graduated from the University of Illinois in 1930 and obtained his M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1932. Following an internship at Illinois Masonic Hospital, Chicago, Dr. Gilmore received his training in radiology at the same hospital under the guidance of his father. After the death of his father in 1935, John succeeded him in his radiological practice as Director of Radiology at the Illinois Masonic Hospital and a private office in the downtown area of Chicago. In 1961 he was appointed Director of the Department of Radiology at West Suburban Hospital, Oak Park, Ill., where he and his partners enjoy a very busy practice. John served his country during World War II as Chief of the X-Ray Service at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas. Academically, Dr. Gilmore has been on the faculty at Northwestern University Medical School since 1936, with the rank of Assistant Professor of Radiology since 1952, participating in both undergraduate and graduate teaching. Dr. Gilmore has served his specialty well both locally and nationally. He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and holds memberships in the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Inter-American College of Radiology, the Institute of Medicine of Chicago, and the various nonradiological medical societies. He has been President of the Chicago Roentgen Society and is an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees. Currently he is Vice-Chairman of the Public Relations Commission of the American College of Radiology, member of its Publication Committee, and Chairman of its History Committee. He is the Delegate to the Twelfth International Congress of Radiology to be held in Tokyo in 1969, representing the Radiological Society on the National Delegation. Dr. Gilmore's activities in the Radiological Society of North America include membership on numerous committees in the past several years. He was First Vice-President in 1951, Chairman of the Technical Exhibits Committee for seven years, has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1964 and was Chairman of the Board in 1967. In 1934 Ramona Mae Brockman became Mrs. Gilmore. “Rae” is not only a delightful person and wonderful wife, but John's constant companion and greatest inspiration.
