Abstract

John Gill, mathematician, teacher, and former governor of the Rocky Mountain Section of the MAA is also a mountain climber of near mythic proportions. According to John Krakauer, mountain climber and author of the best-selling Into Thin Air, “John Gill is a living legend to mountain climbers on three continents, a man held in awe by the best in the sport.” In the article by Krakauer that follows (with excerpts from an interview by Don Albers), Professor Gill eloquently describes the parallels between climbing and doing mathematics. In addition to teaching a full complement of courses at the University of Southern Colorado since 1971, Gill has been active as a research mathematician. He produces about one research paper per year and is the founding editor of the journal, Communications in the Analytic Theory of Continued Fractions.
